Taking A Quick Glance At The Upcoming 82nd Golden Globes Ceremony

Kicking off the awards season, the Golden Globes are the first major ceremony of the year – it is to take place on 5 January, 2025 with a prestigious lineup of films, artists, and presenters

Hollywood's 2025 awards season commences on 5 January, 2025 with the highly anticipated 82nd annual Golden Globes ceremony. Films such as ‘Wicked’, ‘The Brutalist’, and ‘Emilia Perez’ will compete for top honours, setting the stage for the Oscars later in the season.

This year’s Golden Globes promise star-studded glamour, boasting an impressive lineup of nominees that includes Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Denzel Washington, Ariana Grande, and more.

The Golden Globes

Kicking off the awards season, the Golden Globes are the first major ceremony of the year. While not a definitive predictor of Oscar success, the event is renowned for its lively, often irreverent atmosphere and its role as a glamorous gathering of the biggest names in film and television.

A Golden Globes win can generate valuable momentum for a movie or actor's Oscar campaign. As the first televised awards show of the season, the Globes take place ahead of ceremonies like the Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice Awards, and nearly two months before the Oscars, set for 2 March this year.

Nominations & the process

Nominations for the 82nd Golden Globes were announced last month. Winners are selected by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, a significantly smaller group compared to the nearly 9,000 voters for the Academy Awards. In recent years, the Globes' voting body has expanded, and organisers have implemented reforms to address past criticisms over ethical lapses and lack of diversity.

This year’s acting nominees include Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Angelina Jolie. The red-carpet event will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser in her Globes debut.

Leading the night’s movie nominations are the Spanish-language musical ‘Emilia Perez’ and the post-World War II epic ‘The Brutalist’. Other contenders include ‘Conclave’, a film centred on the selection of a pope, and two projects starring Chalamet— the Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’ and the sci-fi epic ‘Dune - Part II.

The Host

In her debut as the host of the Golden Globes, comedian and actor Nikki Glaser will take centre stage as the host of this year’s event. Known for her razor-sharp wit, Glaser has built a reputation through her performances at celebrity roasts, including a memorable turn skewering Tom Brady over his complex love life and crypto endorsements.

She steps into the role following last year’s host, Jo Koy, who faced criticism for a lacklustre opening monologue and hurried pacing throughout the ceremony.

The presenters

The Golden Globes will feature a star-studded lineup and an illustrious roster of presenters, including Andrew Garfield, Anthony Mackie, Anthony Ramos, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ariana DeBose, Aubrey Plaza, Auliʻi Cravalho, Awkwafina, Brandi Carlile, Catherine O’Hara, Colin Farrell, Colman Domingo, Demi Moore, Dwayne Johnson, Édgar Ramírez, Elton John, Gal Gadot, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, Jennifer Coolidge, Kaley Cuoco, Kate Hudson, Kathy Bates, Ke Huy Quan, Kerry Washington, Margaret Qualley, Melissa McCarthy, Michael Keaton, Michelle Yeoh, Miles Teller, Mindy Kaling, Morris Chestnut, Nate Bargatze, Nicolas Cage, Rachel Brosnahan, Rob McElhenney, Salma Hayek Pinault, Sarah Paulson, Seth Rogen, Sharon Stone, Vin Diesel, Viola Davis, and Zoë Kravitz.

The Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards

Viola Davis will be honoured with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award in recognition of her illustrious career, featuring powerful performances in films such as ‘Fences’ and ‘The Woman King’.

The Carol Burnett Award will be presented to former ‘Cheers’ star Ted Danson, celebrating his outstanding contributions to television both on and off the screen. Introduced in 2019, the Carol Burnett Award honours individuals who have significantly impacted the television industry.

For the first time, the Golden Globes will host a separate gala event on 3 January, 2025 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to celebrate both awardees, highlighting their exceptional achievements.

Culinary delights at the Globes

The Golden Globes, often dubbed the ‘party of the year’, will once again feature a culinary collaboration with the renowned Nobu Restaurants group.

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa returns to the event with a selection of his signature dishes, headlined by ‘The Gold Standard Roll’—a luxurious sushi creation featuring king crab, salmon, gold flakes, caviar, and a side of yuzu sauce. This speciality is also available at Nobu restaurants for $77.

Other delectable offerings from Matsuhisa include seaweed tacos, yellowtail jalapeño, sashimi salad, black cod, and an assortment of sushi featuring tuna, white fish, and salmon.

“It’s all about harmony, blending flavours like caviar and jalapeño,” Matsuhisa said, reflecting on his tradition of serving signature Japanese cuisine at the ceremony – he served last year at the Golden Globes as well.
