As excitement builds for Coldplay’s upcoming performance in Mumbai next year, media reports suggest that the band has announced they will retire after releasing their 12th studio album. In a recent interview, Chris Martin confirmed that this decision will allow the band members to explore personal interests outside Coldplay. Having already released nine albums, Coldplay’s 10th album, ‘Moon Music’, is set to be released on 4 October, 2024.
Speaking to Apple Music 1, Martin said, “We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we’re trying to improve.”
“There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 ½ Beatles’ albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes,” Martin mentioned. The musician told People magazine, “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves.”
Though the band will retire, Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion plan to continue collaborating on other projects.
Meanwhile, Coldplay’s Mumbai concert in January 2025 has left a large portion of fans disappointed after tickets sold out in mere minutes. Following this, tickets were being black-marketed at extremely high prices, leading to the summoning of BookMyShow’s CEO by the Mumbai Police over a ticketing scam. Amid these developments, speculation has grown on social media that the concert may be cancelled entirely.
This follows the summons of BookMyShow’s CEO, Ashish Hemrajani, and the company’s technical head on 27 September, 2024 who failed to appear before the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW). The summons is a part of an investigation into the alleged sale of fake tickets for Coldplay’s much-anticipated Mumbai concert. Hemrajani was summoned again on September 30 as the probe continues.
The investigation was initiated after a complaint by advocate Amit Vyas, who accused the online ticketing platform of facilitating black market sales through scalpers and third-party websites at inflated prices. BookMyShow, however, has denied any involvement with scalpers and urged fans to stay vigilant against black market scams in an earlier statement.
Excitement is high as Coldplay returns to India after eight years. The Grammy-winning band, known for hits like ‘Yellow’ and ‘A Sky Full of Stars’, will perform in Mumbai on 18 & 19 January and 21 January, 2025, at the D.Y. Patil Sports Stadium. Initially scheduled for two shows, a third was added due to overwhelming demand.
