SpiceJet's Ajay Singh Announces Lakshadweep, Ayodhya Services

As per media reports, Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet, has announced the airline's exclusive rights under the government's regional connectivity scheme, revealing plans to launch air services to Lakshadweep and the holy city Ayodhya. Speaking at the annual general meeting, Singh emphasised that the recent fund infusion of Rs 2,250 crore would fortify the airline, unlocking market potential and reviving grounded aircraft.

The decision to expand services to Lakshadweep aligns with the current diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives. Notably, online searches for the Union territory surged following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit. The visit triggered derogatory comments from three Maldivian deputy ministers, resulting in their suspension.

Amid calls to boycott the Maldives, a once-popular destination for Indian leisure travellers, SpiceJet's strategic move to connect with Lakshadweep becomes significant. Additionally, recent reports indicate the Indian government's plans to construct a new airfield at Minicoy Islands in Lakshadweep, capable of accommodating both civilian and military aircraft.

As of 7 January, SpiceJet operated 39 aircraft, while 26 remained grounded, according to data from the fleet tracking website Planespotter.
