Edited excerpts:
Could you tell us about your journey and what inspired you to start Antara River Cruises?
My journey into the world of luxury river cruising began with a deep-seated love for travel and a fascination with India's rivers. Growing up, I spent a lot of time near rivers, and I was always captivated by their serene beauty and the life that thrived around them. After spending years in the travel and hospitality industry, I realised there was a significant gap in luxury river cruises in India. This realization, combined with my passion for rivers, inspired me to establish Antara River Cruises. Our aim was to create an unparalleled experience that combines luxury with the rich cultural heritage of India’s river landscapes.
What sets Antara River Cruises apart from other luxury travel experiences in India?
Antara stands out because we offer an intimate and immersive experience that is quite different from traditional luxury travel. Our cruises are designed to provide guests with a unique perspective of India's rivers, from the comfort and elegance of our bespoke vessels. Each cruise is meticulously curated to include cultural experiences, historical insights, and personalised services. We focus on smaller, more exclusive journeys that allow guests to explore hidden gems and interact with local communities. Our attention to detail, from gourmet dining to world-class amenities, ensures that every moment on board is memorable.
Could you describe some of the unique offerings and experiences that guests can expect on an Antara cruise?
On an Antara cruise, guests can expect a blend of luxury, culture, and adventure. Our itineraries are carefully planned to include visits to historical landmarks, local markets, and cultural performances. For instance, on our Ganges cruise, guests can witness the Ganga Aarti in Varanasi, explore the terracotta temples of Kalna, and visit the colonial-era buildings in Chandannagar. We also offer onboard activities such as yoga sessions, cooking classes, and lectures on the history and culture of the regions we pass through. Our cabins are designed for maximum comfort, featuring plush furnishings, private balconies, and panoramic views of the river.
How does Antara ensure sustainability and environmental responsibility in its operations?
Sustainability is a core value at Antara. We believe that preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the regions we operate in is paramount. Our vessels are designed with eco-friendly technologies to minimize environmental impact. We use solar energy, have waste management systems in place, and our cruises are structured to avoid disturbing local ecosystems. Additionally, we collaborate with local communities to support their economy and culture, ensuring that our operations benefit them as well. Education is also a key component, and we engage our guests in discussions about conservation and responsible travel.
What is your vision for the future of Antara River Cruises and the river cruising industry in India?
My vision for Antara is to continue setting new standards for luxury and experiential travel in India. We plan to expand our fleet and explore new rivers, offering even more diverse and enriching experiences to our guests. The river cruising industry in India has immense potential, and we aim to be at the forefront of its growth. Our goal is to showcase the beauty and cultural richness of India’s rivers to a global audience while maintaining our commitment to sustainability and community engagement. In the long term, we hope to inspire more people to appreciate and preserve these incredible waterways.
