As per a media report, the state of Karnataka has welcomed its inaugural riverfront project, gracing the 2.7 km expanse along the Tunga River in Shivamogga, aptly named the Gateway of Malnad. Taking a page from the acclaimed Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad, this rejuvenated locale promises to be a captivating tourist hotspot. Previously shrouded in unruly vegetation, the area's metamorphosis spans from the Bypass Bridge to Bekkina Kalamata.
Imminently, the public will have the opportunity to traverse and experience this revitalised space, marking a significant milestone for the Shivamogga Smart City Limited (SSCL). With a commendable investment of Rs 103 crore, SSCL spearheads this flagship initiative, crafting a picturesque riverfront that adds allure to the cityscape.
According to insiders at the Shivamogga Smart City Limited (SSCL), KMV Project Ltd initiated the project in 2019 to bolster infrastructure and introduce a pedestrian bridge and promenade along the North bank of the Tunga River. The Irrigation Department had previously erected a flood protection wall on the north bank, extending from the bypass bridge to Bekkina Kalmata. The development of the 2.7 km stretch occurred in the available space between this protective wall and the public property boundary.
The project's primary aim was to elevate the aesthetic charm of the city and position it as an enticing tourist hub. The riverfront boasts key attractions such as a 2.63 km footpath, a 2.60 km bicycle path, diverse species of trees and saplings, vibrant flower gardens, dedicated children's play areas, an interactive fountain, gym equipment, climbing walls for adventure enthusiasts, a versatile sports complex, artistic animal sculptures, murals, and Lata mantaps.
Impressive elements include an open-air amphitheater, a ground-floor cafeteria, a parking facility featuring food stalls, an information hub, an upper-level lawn, observation towers, parking facilities, pedestrian bridges at two points, 12 water dispensers, restroom facilities for women, men, and individuals with disabilities, as well as two boat jetties. The aesthetic allure is enhanced by decorative lighting and an ornate electricity tower.
Public Entry
The project was inaugurated on Monday by District Minister Madhu Bangarappa. As the public eagerly anticipates access, ongoing discussions revolve around the potential implementation of an entry fee. K M Krishnappa, the executive engineer of SSLC, mentioned, “A meeting headed by the DC recently decided to allow visitors free of cost for 10 days and charge later. However, on the day of inauguration, the minister suggested allowing visitors free of cost. A decision in this regard will be made at a meeting headed by the minister. Only after that will the public be allowed inside,” he said.
