As per media reports, on World Tourism Day 2024, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), one of India’s largest hospitality groups, reinforced its commitment to sustainable tourism through initiatives focused on green energy, water conservation, and community support. Guided by its ESG+ framework, Paathya, IHCL continues to champion responsible tourism by fostering inclusivity and supporting local economies.

As part of its environmental efforts, IHCL has adopted renewable energy, utilising wind and solar power at several properties. Currently, 43 hotels run entirely on green energy, with 37 per cent of the company’s electricity sourced from renewables—a figure IHCL aims to raise to 50 per cent by 2030. The company has also implemented water conservation strategies, recycling 48 per cent of wastewater and creating water management plans for properties in drought-prone areas. IHCL has eliminated single-use plastics, introduced eco-friendly packaging, and set up 343 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 146 locations across India. For corporate guests, initiatives like ‘Innergise’ green meetings provide sustainable solutions for business events.

In addition to its environmental initiatives, IHCL is dedicated to social empowerment and inclusivity by engaging with local communities. To bridge the skills gap and create employment opportunities for underserved groups, IHCL has partnered with government agencies, educational institutions, and private organisations. Through 35 skill centres located in 25 cities across 15 states, the company aims to train 100,000 young individuals by 2030, with 75 per cent of this goal already reached. The focus remains on supporting marginalised communities. IHCL’s Livelihood Support Programme in Varanasi promotes entrepreneurship among women, while collaborations with UNESCO aim to preserve and celebrate India’s rich intangible cultural heritage.

By continuously reducing its environmental impact and uplifting communities, IHCL has strengthened its position as a leader in responsible tourism.
