Gujarat Allocates Rs 6,000 Cr For 2036 Olympics Bid

As per media reports, the Gujarat government has established a new entity, the 'Gujarat Olympic Planning and Infrastructure Corporation Limited,' to oversee a budget of Rs 6,000 crore for the construction of six sports complexes in preparation for the 2036 Summer Olympics bid by India.

Formed three months ago, the company will focus on developing a 350-acre area around the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad's Motera region. This enclave, currently under construction, features the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest cricket arena in terms of spectator capacity.

An anonymous official revealed, "To fulfill Prime Minister Modi's vision of hosting the Olympics, we have devised a master plan to enhance the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Motera and the surrounding 350-acre areas. The plan, submitted by a selected design firm through an open bid, outlines the construction of six sports complexes."

The company has recently issued tenders to select design firms for these sports complexes, with an estimated project cost of Rs 6000 crore. The principal secretary of the Gujarat Urban Development Department serves as the chairperson, and other board members include the Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad, the CEO of Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, and the Director General of the Sports Authority of Gujarat, among others.

It was officially announced in October 2023 that India would bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics and 2030 Youth Olympics.
