As per media reports, EaseMyTrip has reinforced its anti-Maldives stance despite an apology from the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) to CEO Nishant Pitti. The controversy arose after three Maldivian ministers made derogatory remarks about India and PM Narendra Modi.
In a message circulated via WhatsApp, the company emphasised its ‘Nation First, Business Later’ approach, attributing its stand to the recent inappropriate remarks by Maldivian ministers about India and its citizens. "We have taken a stand in response to the recent inappropriate and unprovoked remarks by multiple Maldivian ministers about India, its citizens and our Hon'ble PM," mentioned the company that has gotten onto the 'Boycott Maldives' trend. Others reported having received the message as well.
The company, actively participating in the 'Boycott Maldives' trend, expressed pride in India's stunning beaches. The Maldives travel body, in an open letter, acknowledged the importance of the Indian market for its tourism sector, with Indians constituting a significant portion of tourists in 2023. The island nation faced backlash after ministers criticised PM Modi's promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination during his visit.
Modi's effort to showcase the Union Territory as a tourist spot faced opposition from certain factions within the ruling Maldives coalition, which has consistently aligned itself with a pro-China stance. While the Maldives government distanced itself from the ministers' comments and suspended them, EaseMyTrip thanked users for social media support and called for unity.
