International Women’s Day this year was celebrated with much fanfare. After the bleak and dismal year gone past, it was to be expected. Since its inception in the year 1911, March 8 has been celebrated as a day to laud the achievements of women, raise awareness about women's equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and raise funds for charities working towards women’s development. The theme for the year 2021 was #ChooseToChallenge – as only by challenging the norms, women bring about effective and lasting change.
Keeping in line with the theme for this year, popular restaurant Whisky Samba joined hands with Women on Top, a global forum founded by writer and happiness coach, Shalini Arora Kochhar, to present the WOT AWARDS 2021, in association with Singleton Whisky. The award ceremony took place on Sunday night, March 7 and awarded women achievers across genres – those that have chosen to challenge the world. It took place at Whisky Samba in Horizon Centre, Gurugram, and was hosted by Kochhar and Ashish Dev Kapur, founder of Whisky Samba. The WOT Awards were instituted to shine a spotlight on iconic, inspiring and successful women from different sectors. The awardees range from corporate to creative fields and industries all over the world, who are flourishing and have made a mark for themselves in their respective professions.
Some of the women who were presented with the award include corporate stalwarts such as Pushpa Bector, who is the Executive Director of DLF Retail, Business Head Luxury and Shopping Malls at DLF DPSL; Anjali Singh, the Managing Director of German banking behemoth, Deutsche Bank; Mallika Datt Sadani, the founder of popular parenting goods brand Moms & Co; Shalini Vig, the founder of the platform for cancer-awareness known as the Festival of Hope Foundation; Ritu Mehrotra, Regional Manager, South Asia, Booking.com; Shweta Jain, the Vice President- Luxury Commercial and Key Accounts at alcohol distribution giant Diageo India; Shirin Mann - founder and creative head for popular Indian footwear brand ‘Needledust’; and Radhika Ghai, the co-founder of web-retail start-up ShopClues.
In the creative field, the awardees included the likes of Sakshi Sindwani, body-positivity spokesperson, plus-size model and content creator; Dolly Singh, comedic actor and digital content creator; Simar Walia, popular Indian Youtuber; and Ayesha Amin Nigam and Komal Pandey, fashion influencers extraordinaire. This list, however, did not end here with many more women leaders and entrepreneurs from Delhi-NCR being recognised for their achievements and contributions to society. The event specifically highlighted and celebrated the indomitable spirit of women. On this joyous occasion Kochhar, the founder of WOT Awards, and Kapur, founder of Whisky Samba emphatically announced that, "the WOT AWARDS 2021 felicitated Women that "Chose to Challenge". It was truly amazing to see women cheer each other on and celebrate International Women’s Day with a collective spirit of sisterhood. We look forward to joining forces in the future again and continue celebrating women in their true glory, through varied aspects of life.”
Some of the awardees took to Instagram to share their happy moments with their digital audience. Naina Ruhail, a woman who went from being an IT professional to a makeup artist and beauty blogger, and finally an entrepreneur, was ecstatic about receiving the first ever award for her present line of work.
When women achievers are recognised and applauded for everything they do, the world is a happier place. WOT and Whisky Samba took a step to celebrate women working towards achieving their goals and fulfilling their dreams, and it is high time we all did the same!
