With ample access to social media, new performers are mushrooming everyday with fresh, new content to deliver. Stand-up comedians today are the new star performers and are increasingly pulling large audiences to their shows, and for certain sections, perhaps more often than multiplexes.
The growing popularity of stand-up comics showcases the new cutting-edge creativity in entertainment. India’s new breed of stand-up comedians are tickling their audience with their bold, unconventional take on the daily life struggles of the common man.
There is no dearth of talent in the country when it comes to stand up acts. Different comedians have different styles for tickling the funny bone of their audience. Popular YouTuber Kannan Gill’s claim to fame was analysis of the kind of Bollywood the 90’s generation grew up watching. He now hosts stand-up acts across the country.
Rajeev Nigam, one of the oldest names in the comedy scenario in India believes the masses now have become classes and want change, hence the demand for new artists with newage content will be on a rise in the field of comedy.
Ali Azgar aka Dadi from the show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ says, “New people in this business bring in more creativity, fresh content and also motivate us to work harder.”
The stand-up comedy culture in India was essentially started by Shekhar Suman with his popular show Movers and Shakers which was the nightly ritual for many. The show ran for over a decade then silently died down. Shekhar then again re-entered the scene by bringing The Great Indian laughter Challenge to Indian television, which gave us big names like Kapil Sharma, Raju Srivastava and Sunil Pal to name a few.
Sunil Pal who won the first season of the show says “People are dealing with too much pressure, for them to come back home to a funny hour is a bliss, as times become tougher, comedy will become a necessity.”
