Google Pledges Rs 135 Crore For Covid-19 Support In India

Google has announced Rs 135 crore in new funding for India, including two grants from Google.org, the philanthropic arm of the tech giant. The total amount from these grants is Rs 20 crore. The first one will go to GiveIndia while the second fund is for UNICEF, both of which will help in procuring medical supplies and help families affected by the Covid-19 outbreak. Not only the company, but many Google employees, called Googlers, have donated to the fund.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday said that he was devastated to see the worsening Covid crisis in India and pledged Rs 135 crore for medical supplies and support in the country.

"Devastated to see the worsening Covid crisis in India. Google & Googlers are providing Rs 135 Crore in funding to @GiveIndia, @UNICEF for medical supplies, orgs supporting high-risk communities, and grants to help spread critical information," the Indian-born Pichai wrote on the microblogging platform Twitter.

Google India Country Head Sanjay Gupta in a blog post said that the company will work with local governments in India to support them during the crisis.

"Our Google community and their families are feeling the devastating impact, too. We’re asking ourselves what more we can do as a company to ensure people get the information and support they need to keep their families and communities healthy and safe," Gupta wrote in the blog post.
