Travel Community Grieves The Demise Of Lotus Trans Travel’s Lajpat Rai

Rai, a prominent member of the Indian travel trade community, had close ties with industry organisations in the tourism and hospitality sector. He was actively engaged in promoting inbound tourism to India, with a special emphasis on Buddhist travel

The travel trade industry is reeling from the sudden loss of Lajpat Rai, Chairman and Managing Director, Lotus Trans Travel, a firm specialising in inbound and Buddhist travel. Rai passed away on 14 June, 2024 while undergoing treatment in Gurugram. He had been receiving cardiac care at Medanta Hospital, where he ultimately took his last breath. He is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters.

Rai was admired for his pleasant demeanour and sharp intellect, and he made significant contributions to the Indian travel and tourism industry. A prominent figure in the Indian travel trade community, he was actively involved with industry bodies in the tourism and hospitality sectors and promoted inbound tourism to India, particularly Buddhist travel. His efforts in strengthening ties with the Japanese travel industry were particularly notable.

In addition to his work with Lotus Trans Travel, Rai owned and operated several hotels across the country and a restaurant in Delhi. He was an active member of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) and played a crucial role in uniting industry stakeholders at various forums and events. His unwavering commitment to his principles and beliefs earned him widespread respect.

Rai was a passionate advocate for promoting Buddhist tourism in India. He consistently voiced the need for improved infrastructure to support Buddhist travellers and to attract more tourists to significant Buddhist sites.

In a media report, Rajesh Mudgill, CEO, Planet India Travels, expressed deep shock and sorrow over Rai's sudden passing. In his tribute to Rai, Mudgill reflected on Rai's significant contributions to the travel industry and acknowledged the profound impact of his loss, “I am deeply hurt to learn of his demise. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. Just last week, we were planning to meet up; I never imagined something like this would happen.”

The substantial contributions of Rai to the travel and tourism industry ensure that his legacy will endure. He will be warmly remembered by colleagues, friends, and the numerous individuals he inspired during his career.
