Swiggy unveiled fascinating insights into the country's love for idlis as it celebrated World Idli Day on 30 March every year. The analysis, covering the period from 30 March 2023 to 25 March 2024, sheds light on the popularity of this South Indian delicacy among Indians.
In the past 12 months, Swiggy has delivered millions of plates of idlis, underscoring the popularity of this dish nationwide. Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai emerge as the top three cities where idlis are ordered the most, followed closely by Mumbai, Pune, Coimbatore, Delhi, Vizag, Kolkata, and Vijayawada.
One Swiggy user from Hyderabad stands out for their love of idlis, having spent a staggering Rs 7.3 lakh on this South Indian delicacy over the last year. The analysis also reveals that the peak time for ordering idlis is between 8 am to 10 am, with consumers from various cities including Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Mumbai also indulging in idlis during dinner time.
The plain idli emerges as the most popular variant across all cities, with a plate of two pieces being the most common order. Rava idli enjoys particular popularity in Bangalore, while ghee/neyi karam podi idli is favoured in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Thatte idli and mini idli also find regular spots among idli orders across cities.
Idlis aren't just a beloved breakfast item but also a healthy one, often regarded as a crucial part of the day's nutrition. Swiggy's analysis indicates that idlis ranks as the second most ordered breakfast item on the platform, following closely behind masala dosa.
Most customers prefer to pair their trusty idlis with accompaniments such as sambar, coconut chutney, karam podi, medu veda, saagu, ghee, red chutney, Jain sambar, tea, and coffee, according to Swiggy's findings.
Lastly, Swiggy highlights the top five restaurants renowned for their delicious idlis: Asha Tiffins in Bangalore, A2B - Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Bangalore and Chennai, Varalakshmi Tiffins in Hyderabad, Sree Akshayam in Chennai, and Veena Stores in Bangalore.
