Bengali cinema’s next big release, Binodiini Ekti Natir Upakhyan, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee, stars the rising Bollywood sensation Rukmini Maitra in the title role, with celebrated actor Rahul Bose as her on-screen love interest. Known for her hit performances in Boomerang and Tekka, Rukmini has delved deeply into her role as Binodini Dasi, the iconic theater queen of Bengal.
“I have always been captivated by the story of Binodini Dasi, and bringing her journey to the screen for Bengali audiences was a dream,” shares Mukherjee, adding that the journey took over two years to secure the budget needed for such a grand musical. “Rukmini stood by me like a Rock of Gibraltar through it all. Her dedication has truly made her the soul of Binodiini.”
Rukmini, reflecting on her transformation for the role, notes, “Ram Kamal’s vision for Binodiini was so unique, I trusted him wholeheartedly. Portraying Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu on stage was almost transcendent—I felt the character’s essence so deeply, it moved me to tears after the takes.”
Produced by Dev Entertainment Ventures, Pramod Films, and Assorted Motion Pictures, the film has already made waves with a teaser that trended over Diwali. The visual opulence rivals Bollywood’s grandest productions, with lavish sets by Tanmay Chakraborty, intricate costumes by Suchishmita Dasgupta, and stunning cinematography by Soumik Halder, earning comparisons to the work of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
In addition to Maitra and Bose, the ensemble cast features celebrated actors like Kaushik Ganguly as Girish Chandra, Om Sahani as Kumar, and Chandreyee Ghosh as Gangabai. Music for the film is composed by Sourendro-Soumyojit, marking the acclaimed duo’s debut in cinema.
Binodiini Ekti Natir Upakhyan is set for a nationwide release on January 23, 2025, promising to be a milestone in regional cinema with universal appeal.
