Thailand's Songkran To Be Held From 11 To 15 April 2024

If you inquire about Thailand's most joyous and highly anticipated festival, most Thais will enthusiastically mention Songkran. Occurring annually from 13 to 15 April, 2024, Songkran marks the traditional Thai New Year with elegance and fervour. Its cultural significance recently earned it the esteemed designation of an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ by UNESCO.

Similar to Holi, Songkran unites communities and entices numerous Indian travellers with its familiar allure. However, instead of colours, water takes centre stage in this grand festival. The act of splashing water carries profound symbolic significance, symbolizing physical purification and spiritual rejuvenation. This aspect serves as a major draw for visitors worldwide, who flock to Thailand to partake in ‘the world's largest water fight’.

Traditionally, Songkran is a period for Thais to express gratitude and spiritual devotion for the upcoming year. Families are observed presenting offerings of food and floral wreaths at temples, praying for the longevity of their elders. The festivities also encompass community gatherings, parades, and cultural performances held throughout the kingdom.

Where to witness Songkran?

Tourists visiting Thailand can immerse themselves in water fights and festive fairs across major towns and cities during Songkran. However, the celebration this year will unfold in Bangkok from 11 to 15 April, 2024 – The Maha Songkran World Water Festival. This event will showcase Thailand's cultural heritage through dazzling parades and performances, including UNESCO-recognised Khon masked dramas and Nora dance dramas. A major highlight of the festival is the Maha Songkran Parade, featuring 20 grand processions and over 1,000 performers, commencing from Phan Fa Lilat Bridge and culminating at Sanam Luang.

After the Maha Songkran Parade, festivities continue with unique Songkran traditions observed in 16 provinces, including Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Chon Buri, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chiang Rai, Nong Khai, Phitsanulok, Songkhla, Buri Ram, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Phanom, Lampang, Loei, Sukhothai, and Phuket. Additional processions will showcase attractions focusing on Thailand’s fashion, games, films and series, and festivals.

In the Water Zone, visitors can enjoy various splash activities, including a musical dancing fountain, water tunnel, and wading pool. The festival fair will offer local products and souvenirs from vendors across the kingdom, accompanied by a captivating drone show. The event will be broadcast globally, allowing people worldwide to experience the essence of Songkran – an integral part of Thailand’s vibrant culture.
