A bevy of Bollywood celebrities and other eminent personalities from media and politics attended the book launch of noted film lyricist Amit Khanna.
The book 'Words Sounds Images: A History of Media and Entertainment in India' was released on December 13 in New Delhi. Some of the eminent names present at the book launch included: writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar, well known actress and politician Jaya Bachchan, Star India Chairman Uday Shankar, noted journalists Prannoy Roy, Rajat Sharma and Smita Prakash and ad man and CBFC Chairperson Prasoon Joshi among others.
Speaking about his new book, Amit Khanna said, “Media and entertainment are primordial human emotions. The information in this book is either first hand, from close friends or distilled from several sources.”
The book takes an exhaustive look at the history of entertainment spanning 5000 years. It looks at a wide array of aspects such as: the state of entertainment during Harappan and Vedic times, including details from the Natyashastra; the early drama, music and dance of Kalidasa; the development of ragas; musical instruments and early folk traditions; the genesis of classical dance forms; developments through the ages, including in the Mughal period, in the southern kingdoms, in the north-east, and under the Marathas and the British.
Khanna writes extensively on media, entertainment and culture (over 1,000 published articles) and has lectured in various universities in India and abroad. He is a past chairman of the Entertainment & Convergence Committees of FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) and National Committee of Media & Entertainment of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry).
This pioneering work is a must-read not just for the students and practitioners of the arts and media but also for their lay consumers.
