Dr Batra’s Positive Health Awards honours great will-power and strength

Not all heroes can fly or wear capes, but they do have the ability to inspire us. The Dr Batra’s Positive Health Awards presented by Bajaj, brings to you real life heroes whose positivity and strength have helped them overcome debilitating diseases and disabilities to prove that #NothingIsImpossible. These individuals with unyielding grit, unflinching determination and immense self-control, have not only overcome seemingly hopeless conditions but have also contributed towards making society a better place. The Dr Batra’s Positive Health Awards salute these ‘Positive Health Heroes’ on 27th November 2019 at the Royal Opera House in Mumbai.

1. People’s Choice Nominee - Devika Malik: The daughter of Deepa Malik - renowned Indian para-athlete, Devika was born with one-sided paralysis. At the young age of 12, Devika began volunteering her time for the community. Having an educational background in Psychology helped Devika counsel people and their caregivers during the rehabilitation process. She went on to co-establish 'Wheeling Happiness' along with her mother that has trained more than 50 para-athletes and have distributed 500+ assistive equipments. It has also made travel, schools, and workplaces more inclusive through their sensitization programmes. They trained airline staff for catering to differently-abled passengers. 

2. People’s Choice Nominee - Mohd. Shams Aalam Shaikh: A record-breaking paralympic, Shams was diagnosed with a tumour on his spinal cord in 2010. An unsuccessful surgery left him paraplegic and wheelchair-bound. Having faced innumerable challenges in his life, he started 'Para Sports Association' in Mumbai and has held Maharashtra’s first Paralympic Games, giving a platform to many others. He has won 4 gold medals in 2014 National Championships. Shams is the only person in the world to complete the longest open sea swim by a paraplegic. The US Department of State Global Sports Mentoring Program has also named him The Best Emerging Leader in Disability Sports and Sports Diplomacy. He also organizes inclusive training camps and workshops across the country and is a motivational speaker. 

3. People’s Choice Nominee - Swarnalatha J: Swarnalatha suffers from Multiple Sclerosis which left her wheelchair-bound. In the 2nd year of college, she was sexually abused by her uncle, which left her physically and mentally broken. A couple of years after the birth of her first child she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which left her wheelchair-bound. This indomitable woman refused to let sexual abuse, patriarchy or multiple sclerosis defeat her. Along with her husband, she established 'Swarga Foundation' which works to improve accessibility for the differently-abled. They also started ‘Sarathi’ project-Tamil Nadu’s first wheelchair accessible transportation service and provide free physiotherapy sessions in their NGO by the name of 'Sowkhya' which has benefitted 2,000 people so far. Swarnalatha is also a motivational speaker.

The winner of the People’s Choice Awards as well as 5 others will be honoured at the Dr Batra’s Positive Health Awards Ceremony on 27th November.
