Poonam Mahajan is also an animal rights activist and has raised her voice against many issues relating to the protection of animals including prohibition of horse carriages in Mumbai, ban on import of rabbit fur and facilitating retirement homes for dogs and horses in army and police forces. She also introduced a Private Members Bill in 2016 seeking an increase in the penalties for animal cruelty through an amendment of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act. Ms Mahajan is also involved with a unique project to build a state of the art animal hospital with the Tata Trusts. The association with Ms. Mahajan opens the doors for the upcoming Elephant Parade, which will see 101 fibreglass elephants take to the streets of Mumbai in the city’s largest ever public art exhibitions in February 2018.
Poonam Mahajan comments, "Conservation of the Asian Elephant is essential for the wellbeing of the forests and people of the continent. We must be relentless in our efforts to preserve and protect this noble species. It is my dream that every Indian child be blessed with the opportunity to see elephants in the wild. It is only with our combined efforts that this dream will be realised. The Elephant Parade is the first big step in that direction that goes beyond borders and politics. And I am really delighted to be a part of this initiative and bringing it to Mumbai in 2018."
Organised by Elephant Family, Elephant Parade India is a awareness raising campaign aimed at drawing attention to the plight of the endangered Asian elephant whose numbers have fallen by 90% in the last 100 years.
Top creatives from Mumbai and all over the country including fine art artists, fashion designers, architects, design institutes, celebrities, tribal, folk and street artists have opened their heart for the cause and will help generate vital funds by turning the 101 fibreglass elephant sculptures into unique art pieces. The finished elephants will be displayed at a number of private preview events in Jaipur, Calcutta and New Delhi in November 2017 and thereafter will be let loose upon the streets of Mumbai early next year. After the public display the elephants will be auctioned to raise funds to help secure 101 Elephant Corridors across India for the endangered Asian elephant.
